Birds Beyond the Book: Everyday Language-Building Fun

Learning about birds with your little one?

The real magic happens when babies transfer knowledge from books into the real world. That’s why every Brilliance of Babies board book is designed to spark conversations and inspire everyday adventures that build vocabulary. Use these simple, low-cost activities to keep the language growing long after story time.

Free & Easy Bird-Inspired Activities

🌿 In Your Backyard

  • Look for birds and nests together, and talk about how they hide (camouflage).

  • Listen for bird sounds and take turns mimicking them.

  • Move like birds—hop, soar, flap your wings.

  • Spot a birdhouse or Martin house nearby.

  • Create a birdbath or simple feeder with items you already have.

🎨 At Home Learning Activities

  • Paint with feathers or use them as paintbrushes.

  • Fill a sensory bin with twigs, grass, and soft materials to explore “nesting.”

  • Add colorful feathers to a bin and name the colors together.

  • Build a cozy “nest” out of blankets and pretend to sit on eggs.

🦅 Field Trips

  • Visit a local zoo, aviary, or even a pet store to spot birds.

  • Plant (or visit) a pollinator-friendly garden and notice which birds visit.

  • Lie on a blanket outdoors and look for birds flying overhead.
